The December gift survival calendar: what to do each week
If you made your decisions in October, December is a victory lap. If you didn’t — welcome, no judgement, here’s the week-by-week survival calendar either way.
Week 1 (December 1–7): close the claims
Every gift you’re giving should be claimed and decided by the end of this week — not necessarily bought, but decided. Open your family’s wishlists, claim what you’re getting, and check what’s still unclaimed on the people you share responsibility for. Unclaimed items on Nan’s list with three weeks to go means the family is still assuming “someone else” has her covered. Someone else does not.
This is also the last comfortable week to fix a dead Kris Kringle — if someone’s dropped out, redraw now while there’s still shopping time. (Modern draws redraw in one tap.)
Week 2 (December 8–14): the online ordering wall
Australian shipping cutoffs for standard parcel delivery hit around December 18–19, and they get earlier every year for anything crossing the country. The rule: everything ordered online must be ordered by the 14th. After this week, online shopping becomes online gambling.
Mark each gift as purchased as it’s ordered — status tracking beats memory, and your co-conspirators can see the family’s progress without asking. Record what you spent while the number’s still on screen (your budget is only real if you track it).
Week 3 (December 15–21): physical shopping + the wrap
In-store week for stragglers — with the wishlist open on your phone, it’s surgical, not aimless. Then wrap everything in one session: music, drink, all of it, one evening. Batch-wrapping is 3× faster than wrapping as-you-go and lets you spot gaps (“wait, is this really all we have for Tom?”) while there’s still a shopping day left.
Mark things wrapped as you go. The status isn’t bureaucracy — it’s the answer to December’s most repeated question: “wait, did we sort something for…?”
Week 4 (December 22–24): the Christmas Eve rule
The rule: by end of the 22nd, you stop. Whatever isn’t handled becomes a voucher in a nice card, and vouchers chosen calmly on the 23rd beat objects bought desperately on the 24th. Christmas Eve is for food, family, and checking the draw reveal settings — not for car parks.
